Flexible Packaging

Formulated polymer products have a range different packaging adhesives and coatings. These fall under 5 main headings:

  Cold seal adhesives
  Wet bond adhesives
  Anti-slip coatings
  PVdC based coatings
Halogen free heat sealable and barrier coatings

Cold Seal Adhesives

Cold seal is a cohesive water-based coating, composed of natural and/or synthetic latex. A unique characteristic of cold adhesives is that they seal themselves. For this reason, it is also known as self-seal. The adhesion between the two substrates covered with cold seal adhesive can be achieved by single pressure.

Furthermore, cold seal doesn’t require heat or dwell, it doesn't limit machine speeds, and is able to seal with minimal package distortion. This technology allows to eliminate product damage by heat and improve packaging integrity over time. Cold seal is applied to a wide variety of paper and film packaging materials dedicated to food and medical applications.

What is the application process?

These products can be processed at room temperature on coating or laminating machine equipped with a coating system and a drying tunnel able to remove the carrier. Formulated Polymer Products produces cold seal adhesives that can run at fast speeds, dry quickly and have unrivalled stability.

Advantages of FPP’s cold seal?

  • FPP’s adhesives provide high-quality sealing with the ability to reduce coating weight and plastic thickness, while maintaining the production efficiency. They also avoid the need for heat application, which leads to energy saving opportunities.

  • Low Foaming - In order to prevent the converter from transferring foam to the substrate, which would lead to a low coating weight and low bond strength, foaming of cold seals must be minimized. Antifoams and de-aerators are added to the formulation to control foaming. The de-aerator manages trapped air, while the antifoam regulates surface foam.

  • Mechanical Stability - There is a lot of natural rubber latex in cold seals. Because the adhesive is subjected to high amounts of shear where the doctor blade meets the gravure cylinder, mechanical stability is crucial for cold seals. Using a klaxon stirrer, FPP Ltd. is an authorized test house for determining the mechanical stability of rubber latex. According to research, FPP Ltd. has created a variety of cold seals with MST levels ranging from 5500 to 7000 seconds while maintaining binding strengths on OPP films.

Wet Bond Adhesives

Wet Bond is a water based adhesive designed for wet lamination of aluminium foil or metallised film to paper, glassine and cardboard. Wet Bond is used in the manufacture of high performance food packaging products.

Benefits

Wet Bond 2555 offers several technical advantages.

  • casein and starch free eliminating any concerns regarding food allergy.
  • resistant to water and grease and is therefore ideal for wrapping butter, cheese, chocolate and stock cubes in aluminium foil/paper laminates
  • withstands severe embossing immediately after lamination.
  • exhibits excellent ‘wet edge’ open time during lamination irrespective of high ambient temperatures.

This version of our wet bond is designed to be cost effective.

PVDC Barrier Coatings

Formulated polymers supply PVDC coatings for food packaging films. The available grades have optimized slip performance enabling very efficient high speed processing on packaging lines.

FP2034 is the low heat seal threshold version with a very good MVTR barrier.

FP2030 is a higher heat seal threshold version with an exceptional MVTR barrier. Both grades contain slip aid additives and a fine particle size precipitated silica dispersion to provide slip and anti-block for the dried coating. FP 2030 is specifically designed for coating on paper/board.

All ingredients in the PVDC coatings comply to the necessary food contact packaging regulations.

Halogen Free Heat SealBarrier Coatings

Halogen Free Heat Seal/Barrier Coatings

Formulated Polymer Products can offer a range of halogen free packaging coatings that cover a range of requirements. See our product matrix below for the different application.
